About The Story

Beti lives in Papua, one of Indonesia’s furthest islands, close to the border with Papua New Guinea. One day, while helping her parents harvest crops, she spots a bulldozer at a nearby construction site—and is instantly fascinated. With her best friend, she rushes to see the machine up close, filled with awe. Beti has always loved big machines and dreams of becoming an engineer. But her excitement is met with resistance: the project manager chases the children away. Undeterred, Beti watches from afar and notices a problem with the construction project. She comes up with an idea—and when she finally shares it, her insight changes everything. The story integrates local cultural elements like the cuscus (a tree-dwelling marsupial) and the nolen (a woven straw bag) to celebrate island life. *Beti’s Bulldozer* is a story about curiosity, resilience, and how innovation and intelligence are found in every corner of the world.
