About The Story
Set in the 1930s, *Catching the Moon* tells the true story of Marcenia Lyle, a young African-American girl with one big dream—to play baseball. While her classmates played with dolls, Marcenia practiced catching, batting, and sliding. But being a girl and Black made it seem impossible in her time. Defying gender norms and racial expectations, Marcenia never stopped dreaming. One day, she catches the attention of Gabby Street, manager of the St. Louis Cardinals’ camp. Her grit, determination, and undeniable talent win her a spot. Marcenia would go on to become Toni Stone, the first woman to play professional baseball with men. This story champions resilience, passion, and the fight against biases—be they around race, gender, or dreams that defy expectations.
