About The Story

The world is full of shapes and angles. In this fun story set in Goa, on the western coast of India two siblings, Savio and Fatima find lots of right angles and a few others on the beach close to their home. Identifying shapes around them can set children on an exciting journey of not only seeing the connections between objects, but also be able to appreciate artistic works and create artworks themselves.

Learning Outcome

  • Recognize different types of angles and geometric shapes in everyday surroundings.
  • Understand that math can be playful, creative, and part of daily life.
  • Learn basic spatial concepts such as right angles and triangle shapes.
  • Strengthen observation skills by identifying patterns and shapes in their environment.
  • Appreciate that learning can happen outside traditional settings like classrooms.
  • Children will become more confident in identifying shapes and angles in real life. They’ll develop an early love for math by associating it with play and creativity, reinforcing that learning doesn’t only happen at desks but everywhere in the world around them.

Activities

  • 1. Angle Hunt: Give children a sheet with pictures or a checklist to find angles in their classroom, playground, or home.
  • 2. Build-a-Shape: Using ice cream sticks or straws, have children build triangles, squares, and rectangles and identify the angles.
  • 3. Beach Scene Drawing: Ask students to draw a beach and include objects showing right angles and triangles (e.g., a beach umbrella, a folded towel, waves).

Story Discussion Guide

Before reading

  • Have you ever done homework you thought would be boring but ended up enjoying?
  • What do you know about angles or shapes like triangles or squares?
  • Besides in books, where else can we find angles?

During reading

  • Ask students to point out objects in the illustrations that show angles.
  • Pause when Fatima identifies an angle at the beach—ask: Can you spot it too?
  • Have students guess what type of angle it might be (right angle, acute, obtuse).

After reading

  • What made Fatima realize that angles can be fun to learn?
  • What different angles did she find at the beach?
  • Why do you think her brother Savio was important in helping her learn?

  • We read it to our Grade 1 a few weeks before and they had so much fun listening to it. The concept of right angles was also very new to them. While reading the story they started finding out the different things in their classroom that makes a right angle like the corner of the wall with a desk and how their bottle at the edge of the desk creates a right angle. They also giggled and asked why the right angle is always right and there is no wrong angle.
The activity at the end of the story where they had to spot the right angles were so engaging and we did it as a whole class. Thank you for such a wonderful story.
