Zama Sama is an absolute game-changer for parents and educators looking to
expand a child's world view. In a digital age where connection is so important, this
platform acts as a beautiful, vibrant bridge between cultures.
The collection of stories is truly unique, offering narratives from places like Malawi,
India, and Vietnam, all categorized by country, age, and theme. This makes it
incredibly easy to find authentic, diverse stories that spark meaningful conversations
about community, tradition, and even challenging topics like displacement.
As an elementary school educator, working in a very diverse community with many
students who are bilingual and English Language Learners, I have used Zama Sama
on a number of occasions to promote culturally relevant pedagogy, and reflect my
students’ interests and identities. My grade 1 class recently read Anna's
Extraordinary Experiments with Weather, when we were learning about changing
weather patterns. This book also came with suggested STEM lessons, and I was
amazed at all the practical ideas that can be incorporated into lesson planning so
easily.
As a parent of young children who love to read, I feel so inspired to talk about
inclusion, kindness, and even sensitive topics such as displacement and bullying,
because of having such resources to support deep conversations.
What sets Zama Sama apart is its commitment to promoting pluralism and empathy,
while allowing children all over the world to feel seen and heard. My children aren't
just reading books; they're stepping into the shoes of peers across the globe,
developing a genuine appreciation for diversity and difference. It’s an invaluable
resource for fostering global consciousness and building a compassionate, open-
minded generation. There is so much to be said about Zama Sama’s wonderful
stories filled with dreams, imagination and artistry. Highly, highly recommended!
