Down The Ages

HISTORICAL
Livraria Lello, in Porto, Portugal, is one of the world’s most beautiful bookstores. Built in 1906, it features a grand red spiral staircase that seems to float, intricate woodwork, and a stunning stained-glass ceiling. This architectural masterpiece blends Neo-Gothic, Art Nouveau, and Beaux-Arts styles to create a fairy-tale setting and is believed to have inspired J.K. Rowling’s vision of Hogwarts and Flourish & Blotts.
It houses a vast collection of books, contemporary as well as rare editions, many of them restored on the premises itself.

CONTEMPORARY
The Tianjin Binhai Library, China, opened in 2017 and attracts 10,000+ visitors daily. Its futuristic “Eye” atrium features floor-to-ceiling shelves holding 1.2 million books! However, the upper tiers display fake books, printed on aluminium panels. The glowing spherical auditorium serves as a social and educational hub, hosting lectures, exhibitions, and cultural events. It has become a global literary landmark, drawing book lovers and tourists alike.

INNOVATIVE
The Little Free Library, USA, was set up by Todd H. Bol in 2009 set in honor of his mother, a teacher and lifelong reader. The project quickly grew into a global movement, with 200,000 Little Free Libraries now present in 120 countries—including Antarctica! Todd believes that sharing books fosters learning and strengthens communities.
